PURPOSE
As a celebration of the beginning of the new
millennium, I
Have a Dream: Bridging Diversity and Building Peace 2001
is a cyberevent
built around the global themes of tolerance, peace and
celebration of cultural diversity. Using the words of Martin
Luther King Jr. , "I
have a dream" as
a starting point for reflection, students around the world
are invited to
- share their
vision of peace for the new millennium by creating a Web
of Peace on the Internet
- build the
website to encourage tolerance, understanding and respect
of others regardless of their race, gender, colour or
religion
- celebrate
diversity as a bridge for peace-building and peace-making

VISION
We
are the future.
Working together we can make a difference. Let's create a culture of peace!
The United Nations
has declared the year 2000 as the International Year for the
Culture of Peace and Non-Violence.
Thousands
of people have signed the Manifesto
2000
which proclaims these six principles of a culture of peace
and non-violence:
- respect
all life,
- reject violence,
- share with
others,
- listen to
understand
- preserve the
planet
- rediscover
solidarity - we are all in this together

Our logo
has children of many races joined hand in hand by
"animated" hearts around the earth. The picture is
a symbol of teamwork, cooperation and reaching out
to others.

2000-01
This logo
was specially created to celebrate the dawn of the
new millennium. The rainbow is a symbol of hope and
new beginnings. The stars are our
dreams.

WHO
CAN PARTICIPATE
Students of all
ages from around the world are invited to contribute to our
Web of Peace. The site will be maintained by the students of
St. Elizabeth School in Ottawa, Canada to provide students
in the global community a forum for voicing their hopes and
dreams for a better future and peaceful world for the new
millennium.

HOW
TO JOIN
The detailed
instructions for submitting both writing and pictures can be found in
the "How
to Submit"
section. We are trying to gather submissions from all over the world for
our Web of Peace.
- Students
will share their vision of peace by beginning and ending
their writing with the words "I have a dream".
- Scanned
artwork, student-created graphics and photos will also be
accepted.
- All
contributions will be posted on our website.
