Hear our welcome speech!

The RealPlayer plug-in RealPlayer logois needed to hear our welcome

The Grade 4/5/6 students (ages 9-11) of the Program for Gifted Learners at St. Elizabeth School in Ottawa, Canada have joined hundreds of other students around the world in the Schools Demining Schools project that is sponsored by the United Nations. In this project students in their local communities run landmine awareness campaigns and organize fund raising activities to help get rid of landmines in school yards in Afghanistan and Mozambique.

We created this site

  • to remind people that kids can make difference with big issues as we did with landmines,
  • to honour and remember the innocent victims of landmines
  • to celebrate the signing and ratification of the Global Ban on Landmines Treaty
  • to make an online resource on landmines for students to use

To help you learn about landmines we challenge you to a treasure hunt in which you use the Internet to find all the facts and issues surrounding anti-personnel landmines. There are quizzes, puzzles and wordsearches to test your knowledge. We have created a photo gallery and our online journal, Good News, where you can read about our button campaign to demine school yards and about what other kids around the world have done to help get rid of landmines.

We hope that you enjoy our website and learn what you can do to help and take action.

Kids can make a difference!
